Our planet could be under pressure, but optimism persists. A fresh honor from the science, music and arts festival Starmus will motivate individuals to take action.

This new Earth medal bearing Jane Goodall's name is to be awarded in memory of the esteemed British primatologist who passed away this year. It will recognise those who advocate for the natural world.

Honoring a Legacy

The first recipients are slated for announcement at the Starmus VIII festival in the Canary Islands, which will run from 17–22 October next year.

It was shared that Goodall, who was a member of the festival's board, had endorsed the medal's establishment. “The concept of having this award, and the festival being tasked to oversee it, is Jane’s,” a statement said. “She said she would like this to happen. This is likely because of the close relationship she had with us.”

“The Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will recognize sustainable programmes carried out to make our world a better place for people, animals and the environment and offer support to continue that work,” commented a relative.

Structure and Vision

One of the founders of Starmus indicated that the medal – which was announced at a scientific institution – will likely include several divisions.

“It will be inspired by the Stephen Hawking medal for science communication established exactly 10 years ago,” it was explained. Jane Goodall was an honoree of that award.

Expressing concern on the outlook for Earth, a prominent voice remarked, “Frankly, it is difficult to be optimistic. Present governance globally is conducting a dismissal of evidence. This situation really cripples the world’s efforts.”

“In truth, the situation appears particularly bright therefore we must really start thinking again, much more seriously regarding the impact of our actions. This concern encompasses not only global warming, that’s the whole way that we treat our environment.”

A Call to Action

Therefore, it was noted it was an opportune moment to emulate Jane Goodall's legacy. “It is believed that in bestowing the prize, the focus will be on this core philosophy of Jane’s – which made her foremost concern, to transform our relationship with wildlife with which we share the planet.”

A major topic currently is the proliferation of false information. The focus of the upcoming festival is set as “the pursuit of factual understanding”.

“There is a recognition that factual reality is becoming a subject of discussion where political interests is involved. This is a perilous development,” he commented. “Climate research remains a scientific discipline; you cannot allow interference from politics in this field.”

Hope and Determination

The hope is that this honor will spur concrete steps. “The purpose is encouraging people to participate and to show concern and to work toward these goals, really. Regardless of if we’re optimistic, we must look at doing the best we can,” it was added. “Be prepared for failure, but you still have to work toward success.”

A descendant engaged in conservation work expressed optimism that “with guidance and when empowered, humans are capable of being diligent stewards of Earth”, pointing to the work of an institute which, in addition to its projects, assists the youth get involved locally, wildlife, and environment.

“As my late grandmother often emphasized, the choices we make each day are significant and it is up to us the kind of difference we make,” it was stated. “There is still time and the Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will give encouragement and raise awareness about beneficial initiatives that are being undertaken.”
