Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
