No fewer than thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its duties in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
