Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Haywire Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was far from happy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or was there ever a thread holding it together from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, before he publicly stated that the club had not mentioned the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Rumours that he could resign were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy during matches as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other first five games, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to determine if they're getting better or imploding.

The Youngster's Unexpected Return

A single player continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio during this campaign. He spent last season with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his owning club were pushing for him to extend his stay a while longer. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived originally under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in that campaign, all but one of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."

Finding His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was still trying to work out the specific characteristics of his skill set. Billed as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
