Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.

No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
